This term we have found out about the useful properties of sticks. Through building the tallest tower, whittling, assessing how ‘snappy’ they are for fire lighting and how their strength can determine their use; we even used them for tracking and map skills.
We have made use of our school grounds and visited the local Savernake forest. Making dens at school led us onto visiting the forest and using only the resources around us to make dens. We discovered that we needed to work together to create the strongest structures. Using strong supports for the frame and ‘y’ shaped sticks as props helped to keep the dens upright. Many a design feature was added by adapting to our environment.
The children have grown in confidence, resilience and learnt to persist in the face of adversity. Their ability to cooperate and work together has been an incredible process to observe.
