Marlborough Boys’ Football Team take up the challenge in Wiltshire Final!

On Wednesday 19th January 2022 Marlborough St Mary’s Y5 and 6 Football teams competed in the Wiltshire Schools’ Football Final.

The boys started well, passing and pressing forward, but were held to a 0-0 draw in their first game. In the following two games, the boys got in their stride, creating chances and scoring goals. Lewis and Bobby worked brilliantly down the centre to push forward and score. Our defence held up well too with Thomas in goal making some great saves and Fritz, Morgan and Josh in defence. The boys went into the final pool game knowing that a draw would put them through to the semi-finals. The boys held their positions with Barnaby, Freddie and William taking their turn out on the wing and running the ball forward. We scored to put us ahead, but with time running out, the opposition took their chance and levelled with fifteen seconds to go. However, we had made it through to the semi-finals as group winners – a fantastic achievement.

The semi-final was fast and furious with both teams creating chances. We succeeded in being the first to score with a cheeky lob from the halfway line from Lewis. We held on to our lead for a while but the opposition finally broke through to equalise. They then, unfortunately, with two minutes left to play, scored again. Losing 2-1 was hard for the boys to accept after their astonishing efforts but they represented their school impressively and showed outstanding teamwork.

They thoroughly enjoyed the day and had the time of their lives.

We would like to say a big thank you to Dan Green and Dan Price for helping to coach the boys in Miss Miles’ enforced absence
