Teaching and Learning

Marlborough St Mary’s is a great school because of the quality of the teaching that goes on day-in, day-out in classrooms.  Our Teaching and Learning Policy sets out the way we approach education and the things that are important to our school.

National Curriculum

At Marlborough St Mary’s we follow the National Curriculum. We use the Oxford Reading Tree reading scheme at Key Stage 1 and the Read, Write Inc. phonics scheme.

Creative Curriculum

The National Curriculum is just one element in the education of every child. There is time and space in the school day and in each week, term and year to range beyond the National Curriculum specifications. We pride ourselves on our creative curriculum, with topics linked across key stages to give a context for learning for the whole school to share. We use a combination of our own bespoke curriculum and the Dimensions Curriculum to ensure coverage and creativity across the school.

The school has developed a theme map across key Stage 1 and 2 linking topics and subject areas.

Throughout the year we celebrate a range of themed days allowing the children to access the National Curriculum in an exciting, fun-filled way that inspires and motivates. During our recent History topic the children shared their learning on the Ancient Greeks, the Mayans and the Great Fire of London, with children visiting each other’s classrooms to learn about the period in history and play games from that time.

Although most curriculum areas are covered through our theme map certain areas are taught in isolation to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum.

Each term curriculum newsletters are sent out to parents with information about the topic for the next term and ways for parents to support their children at home. The curriculum newsletters give an overview of the learning for the term and can be found on the website.

Phonics Guidance for Parents

Play and Learn Sessions

On Friday 25th November Reception parents were invited into school to attend the first of many ‘Play and Learn’ sessions.  A  phonics workshop was held in the hall and parents were then able to join their children in the classroom and observe a range of phonics games and activities. Activities included magic writing, Geraldine’s gym, sand sounds, magnetic letter match, Farmer farmer can we cross your golden river? CVC word missing sounds, initial sound identification and blending and segmenting robot talk. The morning proved extremely successful for all concerned. Look out for our next installment of Outdoor Learning.
